DoorList · Product Design
Turning an event utility into a more social experience.
Friends Activity made the social behavior already happening on DoorList visible, giving students another reason to return between events while showing the value of building a network.

- Core question
- Could visible social activity make DoorList more valuable between events?
The pivotal decision
Gate the feed, or let the feed prove its own value?
A minimum-friend gate sounded like a clean growth mechanic. It also created a chicken-and-egg problem: users with the weakest networks had to invest before they could see why a network mattered.
“Show people the value of the network before asking them to build it.”
What changed
The gate did not create a strong enough network-growth signal to justify its friction.
The more meaningful result appeared in retention: feature retention increased by 4.02%, and overall app retention increased by 1.60%. Making social activity visible helped DoorList feel relevant between events.
